Kynda lives and gardens in Springfield, Illinois with her husband and two golden retrievers. She remembers beginning her first diet at the tender age 15. Throughout her life, she has struggled with overeating and often felt hopeless and ashamed about her weight.
With the passing of each year, Kynda’s weight steadily increased. She’d try the latest fad diet, lose a few pounds, then regain those plus a few more. She tried the liquid diet. She tried the popular weight loss meetings. Even with knowledge about the potential for serious side effects, she tried diet pills. The latest diet book being published? Karen would be on the wait list to get the first edition!
As the years went by, those failed attempts led to even more weight gain. Eventually, thoughts of going to another meeting or trying the latest diet in the current month’s magazines lost their appeal. Those things weren’t going to work and they would just lead to even more weight gain, so why bother? Kynda spent years refusing to get on the scale.
As a survivor of a motorcycle accident in her early twenties, Kynda began experiencing severe joint pain, which was only exacerbated by her weight. Standing in line at a grocery store to check out became an excruciating experience, and in her late forties she had surgery to replace her knees. Even after such a drastic medical intervention, she still needed anti-inflammatory medications for pain in all her other joints.
Kynda tried to exercise her weight off, too. How many gyms did she join? Too many to count. She tried aerobics, dance classes, spinning, yoga, and Pilates. In 2009, she joined a local training group to prepare to walk a 10K in Illinois’ August heat. While she is proud to have walked that course, when she crossed the finish line, she hadn’t lost an ounce.
When Kynda’s husband Mark was diagnosed with diabetes, they obediently went to the dietician as instructed. Measuring out half-cups of spaghetti and eating small meals more often did not help, and it sure didn’t make eating pleasurable. They both went back to eating whatever, whenever and, feeling hopeless, they watched Mark’s A1C steadily climb.
Kynda was constantly worried. She knew the long-term complications of diabetes- a close family member, whom she considered a sister, lost her kidneys, her eyesight, her leg, and then her life to complications of diabetes- and she was terrified that was going to happen to her husband, too. All the while, she baked cookies and cakes, she bought bigger and bigger pants for herself, and she continued worrying about her husband’s health.
Through it all, every so often, Kynda would get a glimpse of a different future. She had a dream that one day she would learn how to lose weight, and then go on help other people lose weight, too. She spent thirty years in her professional career helping people solve problems, and felt embarrassed that she couldn’t solve her own weight problem. Kynda blamed herself, thinking she just didn’t have the willpower.
One day, right after Christmas 2015, Kynda was sitting at her son’s dining room table, scrolling through Facebook. The Ketogenic Success group popped up on her newsfeed as a suggested page, and after seeing the first few before-and-after progress pictures, she knew immediately she was going to give it a try. Finally, she had found something different than the same old dietary advice of eating less and moving more. She was relieved to finally understand that she didn’t have to blame herself anymore. Along the way, Kynda got stuck and reached out to the Ketovangelist team for coaching services that got the scale moving again. She’s been where you may be now.
Kynda has now lost 78 pounds and she feels incredible! She and her husband eat food that is delicious and filling, and that makes them happy. Her joint pain is gone and she no longer needs pain medications. Her husband Mark has dramatically reversed his diabetes, and all five of his meds have been discontinued. Since becoming a Ketovangelist Coach, Kynda’s finally living her dream of helping other people lose weight, too.
